• Leichtner Studios Wins First Senior Photographers International
Kodak Gallery Award
Karen Fetzner, photographer/manager for Leichtner Studios has won the
first SPI (Senior Photographers International) award ever offered by
Kodak. She was presented with the award at SPI’s 2003 Convention
in Orlando, Florida. Fetzner’s eight senior portraits were displayed
in a “Timeless” folio from Taprell Loomis (TAP). This prompted
Glen A. Clark, vice president of Professional Markets at TAP, to state
that the company was proud to “be the backdrop” for her award-winning
work. Leichtner Studios was also honored as Marketer of the Year, an
award sponsored by The Levin Company at the same convention.

Kodak Acquires ASF
Eastman Kodak Company recently announced a definitive agreement to acquire
Applied Science Fiction’s proprietary rapid film processing technology,
Digital PIC™, and other key assets. Applied Science Fiction is
the creator of the award-winning Digital ICE™ and Digital ICE3™ technologies,
the leader of automatic photo restoration applications, as well as the
inventor of the cutting-edge digital dry film processing system, Digital
PIC. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Noted photographer Victor Avila passed away on May 22, 2003 of diabetes.
Services were held in San Diego, California.

German Photographer Selected for Hall of Fame Duratrans
Cornelia Dörr is the featured photographer for the latest Photography
Hall of Fame and Museum Duratrans image. Her photograph, “Glacier
Grey,” was taken in 1991 during a visit to Torres del Paine National
Park in Chile. The International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum
Duratrans image measures an incredible 26 x 6 feet and is on display
at the entrance of the IPHF, inside the Kirkpatrick Science and Air Space
Museum at Omniplex. This year’s image will be on display for one
year and marks the first time the IPHF Duratrans was printed digitally.

Oldersdorf Hosts Alaska Safaris
Frequent Rangefinder contributor and outdoorsman, Jim Oltersdorf (highrisk@acsalaska.net)
will be hosting a series of photographic safaris through September 1
in cooperation with Ingram’s Base Camp, a beautiful
fishing, sightseeing and hunting lodge in Cooper Landing, Alaska. According
to Jim, “We will be taking clients that have a sincere interest
in learning advanced photographic techniques and experiencing a very
high-quality adventure into the vast Alaskan wilderness. Over a period
of three to five days, we will be flying a 1943 Norseman floatplane into
remote lakes filled with waterfowl, landing near herds of caribou that
number in the hundreds of thousands of animals, catching an eyeful of
a huge Alaskan Brown bear catching salmon, and much more.” Information:

Canon’s Dave Metz Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
David Richard Metz, Director of Professional Products at Canon U.S.A.,
is one of two recipients of the 2003 Joseph A. Sprague Lifetime Achievement
Award for Photojournalism, the highest honor in the field of photojournalism.
The award was presented to Metz at the recent 58th annual National Press
Photographer’s Association Convention in Chicago. The Joseph A.
Sprague Memorial Award was named in honor of the press technical representative
for Graflex Corporation, who is credited with the design of the Big Bertha,
Magic Eye and Combat Camera and dozens of refinements to the legendary
Speed Graphic. Previous recipients of the award include, William Randolph
Hearst (1951), Alfred Eisenstaedt (1971), Eddie Adams/Cornell Capa (1976)
and Marion Post Wolcott (1990).
