“In-Flight” Wedding . . . May Win Photographers Flight to London

A brave young couple exchange wedding rings after leaping out of an airplane and free-falling through a cloudless blue sky.

An exuberant groom lifts his new bride high in the air outside the church as they celebrate their wedding day.

A bride and groom run along a sandy beach, the bride’s veil and wedding gown lifted by a gentle breeze.

Photographers who capture those types of “in flight” images may soon find themselves, and a companion, “in flight” to London, courtesy of Eventpix.com, Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) and Virgin Atlantic Airways. Other prizes will be awarded to the runners-up.

“The winning photograph will be the one that best illustrates the theme ‘In Flight” from a wedding,’ explained J.L. Applebaum, president and chief executive officer of Eventpix.com. “The possibilities are endless.”

The “In Flight” Photography Contest will officially kick off at the 22nd annual WPPI 2002 Convention and Trade Show March 10–14 at the Las Vegas Tropicana Resort & Casino. Two free round-trip tickets to London provided by Virgin Atlantic will also be raffled off at the Eventpix booth during the show.

The contest is open to photographers who are members of Eventpix.com, an innovative web site geared specifically to wedding and event photographers. The site allows photographers to quickly and easily upload images from an event, allowing photos to be viewed and purchased from anywhere in the world. Links on the site provide visitors with information about wedding albums, frames, invitations and wedding gowns.

Eventpix.com was founded in 2000. “The mission of Eventpix.com is to help photographers increase revenues by selling additional photographs from an event via the Internet,” Applebaum said.

She noted that the site provides photographers with a cost-effective way to offer photos to guests who in the past might not have had access to proofs. “People who were unable to attend an event but would like a memento of the occasion can also purchase photos on-line,” she said.

In addition, Applebaum said the web site is unique in that it provides retail cross promotions, such as a national promotion with Bloomingdales’s, allowing photographers to reach an even broader market.

In addition to the two grand prize winners—one wedding photographer chosen for the spring/summer season and the other selected for the fall/winter season—round-trip tickets to London will be presented to the bride and groom featured in the top winning images.

Photographers can enter as many photos as they want but only one entry is allowed per wedding.

From among the entries, a panel of six judges will select five semi-finalists. The panel of nationally acclaimed portrait, wedding and celebrity photographers includes Michael Ayers, Michael Jacobs, Robert Love, Patrick Rice and Firooz Zahedi. The sixth judge is Kathryn Chambers, manager of sales promotions and sponsorship with Virgin Atlantic.

The selected images will be posted on the Internet, at Eventpix.com, Eventpix-Virgin AtlanticInFlightContest.com, Rangefindermag.com and wppinow.com. Visitors to those sites can vote once for their favorite photograph. Combined with a vote of the six judges, first through fifth place winners will be awarded.

First place will receive two round-trip tickets to London on Virgin Atlantic, good for one year. Second place will receive two free registrations for the WPPI Convention and Trade Show in 2003, valued at $578. Third place will receive $200; fourth place receives $100 and fifth place gets $50.

Entries will be accepted on-line. Submissions need to be approximately 8x10 inches in size at 150dpi in TIFF or PSD (uncompressed) formats. No digitally altered or manipulated images will be accepted.

The spring/summer contest begins March 15 and ends Aug. 31. The fall/winter contest, which begins Sept. 1, closes Feb. 28.

Winners will be announced in the Rangefinder as well as on the following web sites:
Eventpix.com
Eventpix-VirginAtlanticInFlightContest.com
Rangefindermag.com
wppinow.com.

All winning and runner-up images will be displayed at the WPPI Convention and Trade Show in 2003.

Along with the In Flight contest, brides-to-be will have an opportunity to win a drawing for two round-trip tickets to London on Virgin Atlantic through an Eventpix.com promotion with Bloomingdale’s.

Eventpix.com photographers at Bloomingdale’s bridal fairs, where the brides-to-be can meet various vendors to a wedding, will also provide a complimentary 5x7-inch photo taken at the event. The photo will be uploaded to the Eventpix.com site for others to order; the image in a folio frame will be sent to the store for purchasers to pick up.

Applebaum said additional photographers were actively being sought to participate in the Bloomingdale’s national program. Interested photographers should call Eventpix at (310) 395-5390 or e-mail japplebaum@evenpix.com.

“In addition to the Eventpix.com web site providing visitors with a network of successful and talented event photographers, participation in the Bloomingdale’s program gives photographers an excellent opportunity to reach out to the bridal market.”
