Rƒ Cookbook by Fernando Escovar
The Judith Lieber Handbag Ad

Sometimes companies keep running their ads over and over again because they work, or they get lazy. Then all of sudden they must change it, or a new product has come out, and they have to change it now!

These glitzy glamour evening bags are the exclamation point to a woman’s outfit. The imagery has to express the same feeling. Choosing the model was half the battle. We wanted a classy vintage young face with a look that says “opulence.” We started with rhinestones on her eyelashes and continued with a bold red painting in the background.

I placed a single, undiffused, tungsten 500-watt light in a parabolic reflector just slightly to the left of my camera angle, so that the light would not create a deep shadow on her nose. Also, the light needed to reflect off the painting around the rose handbag so that it would separate from the rich red of the background.

Using my Canon 1DS with a 17–28mm lens, on its highest setting RAW (11.0 megapixel), with a shutter speed of 1/250 at f/4 and the ISO set to 100, I began shooting. I made slight adjustments to the shutter speed after viewing the images on the camera’s LCD. After “feeling it,” I stopped and put the CF card in the card-reader that was attached to my 15-inch Mac PowerBook and I opened the images up in the Preview program all at the same time.

Once opened we could really view the images and make more changes or spawn some new ideas.

Shooting digitally has changed the way I think about lighting in the sense that with minimal lighting one can accomplish many looks. Having the ability to instantly verify the effect of your lighting makes shooting complex assignments on deadline much, much easier than in the past.

This basic set up produced a rich and moody image. I later retouched the image in Photoshop to remove some slight imperfections. This image was a team effort. Make-up by Jeffrey Paul and Hair by Chad Cardoos, both from L.A.
