Got Digital? Kodak’s Pulse Poll Proves Value of Going Digital
Kodak Professional, a Division of Eastman Kodak Company, conducted a survey last year and discovered that three out of five American photographers say that digital photography is creating opportunities they did not have when they were film based. The poll was emailed to more than 5000 photographers last year and the 10-question survey was answered by 881 photographers. Outstanding statistics include the startling fact that 72 percent, three out of four, respondents, stated that they take at least a few of their images with a digital camera.

The poll proved that more than half of those using a digital camera said they took 50 percent of their images digitally. An impressive 26 percent claimed they make over three quarters of their images with a digital camera. Two thirds of the photographers claimed that they were saving money by cutting film and lab costs. Kodak found that two of five respondents, 38 percent, liked the flexibility of digital and the irrefutable fact that they could shoot more images in a session.

One in four photographers cited that the single greatest impact of digital technology on them was the creation of a greater variety of products for the clients. Eleven percent of the respondents said they could finish sessions faster and therefore do more jobs. The survey yielded very little negative feedback, although 34 percent of the photographers cited the “learning curve” as an impediment to going digital and only 28 percent of the respondents complained about the expense of investing in equipment. Surprisingly, only 11 percent reported that they preferred the image quality obtained by using film instead of digital technology. Not surprisingly, less than one percent of the respondents stated that they would never shoot a digital camera.
